Skate Bag Essentials (+ free printable checklist)
Hi Skate Stars!
I made this checklist of skate bag essentials which is perfect if your anything like me and always realising you've forgotten something crucial- only when it's too late. This checklist is also perfect for beginner skaters stumped with what to buy when starting out!
I hope this list is helpful! I included some blank spaces for you to write in anything you like- everyones different! I suggest printing it out and keeping in your skating journal or bag for easy access when packing (pro tip: pack the night before and review the morning of!)
Let's get started!
Skates
Duh- these are my most prized possession- take care of them and they will take care of you!
Choosing skates can be a daunting task, talking to your coach or other skaters is really helpful when considering buying new skates, there are also some great resources online to help educate yourself (here is a great chart). If your a beginner there are some great instructional sets offered with great support at a great price point such as these, ******
Soakers
These babies protect your blades while in your skate bag, they suck up moisture to prevent rusting of the blade and breakdown of the leather where your blade is mounted!
There are a ton of different types of soakers available at a very reasonable price point, keep an eye out for fun designs and fabrics too!
Hard Guards
These are worn to protect and lengthen the life of the blades, hard guards should be worn at all times when you are not on the ice or a soft specialised surface (such as the rubber flooring in the rink).
Like soakers, hard guards come in different and cool designs- express yourself!
A Towel
A towel is necessary to wipe down and dry the blades and base of boots after a session on the ice- this part is super important, so don't skip it. It's suggested that straight after you get off the ice, dry your blades and pop your soakers on.
This doesn't need to be anything special- any absorbent material will do! You can use something you have lying around at home or one of these cute embellished ones!
Gloves
Life saver. Don't be caught without a pair (I have 4 in my bag!) Moving fast, spinning & falls on the ice make for really really cold extremities. There's nothing worse than having stinging hands or restricted movement out on the ice.
Any pair will do, I suggest buying a pack and playing it safe (they will get wet) for back up.
Appropriate Clothing
Think comfort and function! Figure skating is a sport- the clothing you wear will need to allow for movement while reducing drag. A good place to start is with layering basics- you can mix and match from there.
Basic leggings (a plus if they are warm or waterproof)
Form fitting tops (long sleeve and short sleeve)
A fitted jacket (necessary for warm-ups)
Running Shoes (wear to the rink and during warmup/off ice training)
Water Bottle
No explaining to do here- get a reusable one! It's great for the environment and no one will mistake it for theirs!
Skate Journal/Level Checklists
Stay on top of your progress and pack a notebook for you or your coach to write notes, routines and reminders for your practice! You should also keep a page with your the required elements of any level or test your working on- great if your stuck on what to do during practice!
Beauty Bag
This is to keep the little necessitys- headbands, hair clips or bobby pins, lip balm, bandaids and feminine products are great 'just-in-case' additions.
Sturdy Bag
You need something to put it all in! Your skate bag can get pretty heavy and bulky, something spacious and durable is recommended!

Every skater is different and so is their bag! Here are some suggested handy items you might want to keep in your skate bag!

Atheletic Tape
